The passing of a legend…
Bill Walsh the legendary coach of the San Francisco 49ers passed away on Monday after a battle with leukemia, he was 75. Coach Walsh was an innovator, a member of the Football Hall of Fame, a named coach of the year, winner of 6 division titles and 3 super bowls. Walsh was even a part of NFL history. In just his 3rd season coaching the 49ers they won the division title with one of the most historic plays in NFL history. It is simply known as ‘the catch’. (Montana to Dwight in the end zone for the win)
Walsh is credited with pioneering the west coast offense, which uses short passes in lieu of a running game, popular on 3rd downs. It was ahead of its time and was infiltrated into the entire league.
Walsh created a dynasty in the 80s by using draft picks and trades. He built successful teams and coaches. Players of magnitude have been lead by Walsh, Joe Montana, Steve Young, Ronnie Lott and Jerry Rice. Walsh also molded future coaches in his program, Andy Reid of the Eagles, John Gruden of the Buccaneers, Mike Shanahan of the Broncos and Mike Holmgren of the Seahawks were all studies of Walsh, and all have made super bowl appearances.
Garnett goes green…
Kevin Garnett is all but going to Boston, that’s the announcement anticipated late Tuesday by team officials. The trade to the Celtics would have Garnett sticking around Boston until the 2011-12 season. The trade is one of the largest in NBA history with Boston giving up 5 players and 2 draft picks to secure Garnett in a deal worth an estimated $116 million.
For that amount of money, I expect the Celtics in the finals next year…and the following five. I guess Boston thinks it can buy back their dynasty from the Bird, McHale days.
American out…
Formula One racing has dropped the lone American driver. Scott Speed, the lone statesman in the most elite series of motorsports, was dropped from his owner Toro Rosso.
First the US Grand Prix gets dropped from Indy, now the only guy in the series we can pronounce is gone. F1 will become a fleeting memory in US motorsports, which is really sad. F1 fields the best drivers in the world and the spectacle it creates in just awesome.
Shock jock against Vick…
Tampa Bay shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge has called for a gear swap. The Sirius radio talk show host has proposed an incentive for his listeners in order to combat those in support of Vick. Send Bubba your Vick jersey and he’ll send you his own merchandise. The Vick merchandise they receive they will destroy on the air.
It’s no secret the abrasive and mostly offensive host is a lover of animals and became sickened with the allegations against Vick. He’s calling for a modern day gear swap and he’s more than happy to give away his own merchandise.
I have to admit, if I had any Vick items…I couldn’t ship them fast enough.
