Puck it, I'm just going to admit it...

I have discovered the NHL.

The NHL has long been fifth fiddle (even demoted to roadie during the Winter Olympics when curling is on) in my sports sphere behind the much flashier, more glamorous NASCAR, the NFL, NCAA and even the NBA/MLB. The NHL is really kind of that dork you just wave off in hot pursuit of something that looks better.

Oh, how wrong I've been.

My first love is and always will be NASCAR followed by any form of pigskin, but I just found something to fill the void between races and football games.

"What do you know about hockey?" is the most common question I get asked when people find out about my new relationship.

"Absolutely nothing," I reply. However, I'm having fun learning a new game and I know two things about hockey that draw me in like a moth to a flame.

It's fast. It's physical. Two of my favorite things wrapped up into one sport equals just shy of super amazing.

Now the hard part...picking a favorite team.

I'm putting together a short list of requirements to become my favorite NHL team and I think these criteria may work...
  • Team with the least amount of original teeth.
  • Team with the most FM (fight minutes).
  • Playoff material (because let's face it I pull for the not so successful in other sports and just once I'd like to follow SOMEBODY to the playoffs).
  • At least one American on the roster because when it comes time for the Olympics I want to be interested in more than just one game here and there.
  • A team that originates somewhere cold because then they actually have some historic value
  • A decent goalie, I don't want to see my team killed every week.

Hopefully I'll narrow it down to one soon. In the meantime I'll keep teaching myself the game and enjoying the show.
