We made it back from New Mexico in one piece, minus a strange shin injury that I just can't place - and I've tried.
On the way home we decided to take the scenic route instead of retracing our steps east on Highway 54. There's just something depressing about driving through absolutely nothing until a rough town rises from the dust. Our route home was north out of Albuquerque on Interstate 25 along the mountains.
The road was narrow, and pretty winding, but much prettier until we hit our highway to head further east. I spotted a scenic overlook prior to our turnoff at Trinidad, Colorado and decided to stop real quick to take in God's handiwork. I figured we could spare a few minutes to marvel at some awesome scenery, we lack it in ol' Dodge. I'm glad we stopped. It was worth it.
We decided to take a slight detour to Rocky Ford, Colorado to hit up a couple of produce stands. Rocky Ford is the nation's leading producer in melons. In fact, their school mascot is a meloneer. Whatever the hell that is. I didn't ask. And, yes, Rocky Ford was the source of the listeria outbreak, but I don't like any melon other than watermelon - and I hosed them down pretty good before I sliced into them. I even got a big box of peaches and put them up to enjoy later. Nothing better than fresh Colorado peaches! (this pic of produce was borrowed from my co-worker K. Scott)
I'm hanging up the keys for a little while and will be desk tied until at least November. It's hard to believe that's only weeks away. I guess it's true that time really flies when you're too busy to notice.
