Wheat harvest 2014...

Wheat harvest for Farlee Farms began July 2, and by July 4 we were done with half the wheat acres. Early start times due to wind were helpful in speeding things right along.

The rains over the past few weeks have accelerated weed growth, so Dad made the decision to spray part of the acreage. The rest of the harvest will be complete hopefully this week. However, I'll be back at my desk after taking an entire week off from the desk job to help get started. Sis will take over mid-week.

The wheat was better than expected, and averaged between 30 and 50 bushels per acre. We anticipate the second wave of harvest to be very similar. The biggest challenge was short wheat, and having to pay extra close attention to the header running as low as it could. You didn't want to have to step outside of the AC to scoop dirt out of a header.

We did luck out with only one minor breakdown, and I learned how to change chopper blades. They use blade loosely because it's a rectangular piece of iron, but when you need to change one - you actually have to change six. Something about balance. Dad also had to make a repair to the header, but it didn't cause any down time.

The first part was a success, let's hope the second round is, too!
