When you put together the P.T. Barnum of racing (Humpy Wheeler), a ‘home’ race for NASCAR and a sponsor with deep pockets and connections a mile long you don’t get your typical all-star event. You get a night of electricity, under the lights.
Not only do race fans get one hell of a race, they get a pit crew challenge to see their favorite teams go head to head in a bracket style competition. This year they’re even getting a burnout competition. The inaugural event will feature Kansas racer, Clint Bowyer and is the brainchild of Wheeler. It promises to be exciting.
Every year Wheeler calls a news conference and makes his pick for the winning driver. He’s been fairly successful, picking 10 of the 19 winners since he started going out on a limb. His 2008 pick, Carl Edwards.
Not a shabby pick, but my money is on Dale Jr. It’s a non-points race and when it comes to non-points races in 2008, junior is undefeated. He won his first all-star race in 2000 as a rookie and was the first rookie to ever win. Hmm, technically he’s a rookie again…a Hendrick Motorsports rookie.
Check out the Speed Channel because they'll have a day packed full of all-star programming.
I'll be tuning in.
