I feel like a 'slogger' (that's a slacking blogger).
Race season has started, which means I'm busy and I got a new job! First of all, let me shamelessly plug the website I have been contributing to, www.CupScene.com. Check it out. We have added another writer to the "staff" a 14 year media center vet. So I am pretty excited to be in such good company. I love writing for the site and hope I can continue doing it - and who knows, maybe it will lead to bigger better things.
But, until that happens I need to pay the bills. To do that I had to get a real job and after nearly two years of hoofing it - I finally found one. I recently accepted a position at the High Plains Journal/Midwest Ag Journal (www.hpj.com). I will be the new assistant director of marketing and will handle not only marketing projects, but public relations. I'm excited to be back into the public relations world and looking forward to working with a great group of professionals that will help me refine my craft. I will be based at the corporate office in Dodge City.
That being said, I am moving to Dodge City.
I have been to Dodge City twice in my life. The first time was the job interview, the second was passing through a month later to look at an apartment, which I am not even living in when I do make my way down there. I am moving blind - meaning I called a guy and rented a place without even looking at it. I'm not worried though, my boss assures me that it's okay and in a good part of town.
I am actually considering taking a class or two in Spanish when I get there - just so I know when somebody is trash talking. Knowledge is power, right? Chances are the class won't happen and I'll just have to use what I pick up at Wal-Mart shopping for groceries. I am hoping the change in location, neighbors and culture provides me some great blog material.
This will be a great opportunity and you just never know who you'll meet, what you'll do or what kind of impression you will make. Case in point, how I found out about the job. A High Plains Journal sales guy was in a booth next to mine at a farm show - I must have made an impression because he told me he felt like I would be a good fit at High Plains Journal.
I guess somebody else thought the same.

Sounds like my move to Hawaii :) Congratulations, Sarah! Kelly and I hope you enjoy your new job and environment. Kelly is wondering if the feedlots are still in operation over there... with the requisite smell (money!)? Hope all goes well for you.
