Friday at the track...

There is nothing better than a racetrack early in the morning - the hum of generators and the crispness of fall. It’s just getting light out and the campers are just waking from a long night of meeting neighbors and debating why certain camps fly certain numbers.

Friday is what most would call a “down” day because the only activity are practices and qualifying. Here are some pictures from the Friday at the Kansas Speedway... I also apologize for the quality - it's a camera phone.

The King Richard Petty (middle), Elliott Sadler (left) and Martin Truex, Jr. (right) talk about their pink racecars to bring awareness to National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The King has a special 'pink' cowboy hat that will be auctioned off for Susan G. Komen.

Fans started lining the media center walkway first thing in the morning. Hate to break it to them, but drivers don't come down this walkway unless it's totally necessary. There are lots of secret entrances to this building. I also noticed many fans lined up along the fence in the Sprint Fanwalk area. Kansas is one of the only tracks where fans will get this up close and personal with drivers. Seriously, I nearly saw a group get mowed over during practice.
Clint Bowyer talks to the media about the penalty, how he's dealing with it and how being home has been a welcomed distraction. Bowyer took the opportunity to race a little dirt while at his old stomping grounds.
The garage during practice. Carl Edwards was in making adjustments right before practice concluded. Fans with the right credentials can hang out at the haulers during practice and get a close up look at what makes a race weekend run.
Richard Petty stops to talk to a few folks on his way out of the media center at Kansas. Petty was there to talk about his involvement in bringing awareness to National Breast Cancer Awareness month.
