If you recall I've tried my green thumb the past two summers in Dodge City, and they have failed miserably. I take that back. The first summer I tried I got one strawberry - that's right. One.
This summer I decided maybe I'd like to try it one more time. Third time is a charm, right? I hope so. I took some advice from some co-workers and purchased different soil. This time I used a cotton burr compost, and an ultimate potting mix. I also decided to skip over the retail plants and went right to a local nursery. This nursery only sells plants that will be able to grow here in hot, windy, Southwest Kansas.
We shall see how it goes.
I also tried a few other "patio garden" ideas from Pinterest. I bought a shoe organizer to help manage my new problem of multiplying footwear. I cut off the bottom two rows of my $6 Wal-Mart purchase and decided to try my hand at planting strawberries in it. Since I just trimmed it, I had to do a little engineering in order to hang it. I had to sew a sleeve before I slid the metal rod in, and it seemed to work. Let's hope it does and gravity doesn't make other plans.
I also roamed around the new Tractor Supply in town and bought a 10 gallon tub and a liter of Coke. I wanted to try my hand at drip irrigation with a bottle. I drank the Coke and then put holes in the bottle and planted it in the center of the tub, poured water in and hopefully I'm watering the roots. It drained pretty fast, so I'm wondering if my holes were to big. We shall see.
I hope I can blog about the bountiful harvest in a few months - but I'm not holding my breath.
