It's time to be thankful.
I still don't understand why we can only do this thankful business in November. Why can't we do it in say, April or July? I suppose it has something to do with Christmas. I for one, am thankful that Christmas hasn't taken over the Fourth of July. Yet.
In the spirit of "everyone else is doing it" I figured I would write about what I'm thankful for. I have a pretty short list because I like brevity and being concise when it comes to this type of thing.
So, here goes.
I'm thankful for family, friends, and being able to do what I want 88 percent of the time.
I've written about my family on this blog, a lot. I also write about whatever I want, so that covers the 88 percent. So, I decided to take a little different approach and write about my friends.
Friendship is a lot like getting a dog. Sometimes it's a stray that just shows up at the door, and sometimes it's a pet somebody has just handed over to you or tossed out haphazardly. And, sometimes it's like going to the animal shelter where you mosey around and look at all the souls vying for your affection, but you try not to make eye contact because nobody wants to think of Sarah McLachlan while they're in an animal shelter.
Regardless of how you meet, it happens.
You feel an instant connection with the one you're meant to be with. Sure, it may only have one eye, or half an ear, or maybe it doesn't even have all its legs, maybe it's clueless, but that doesn't matter. Something draws you in. You sign some stuff. You adopt them (or sigh and take them in anyway). They become a responsibility (but the good kind, most of the time).
You'll have good times playing fetch and tugging on ropes, and you'll be warm snuggling up in the winter. You'll have trying times that make you want to drag them back to the shelter, like when they chew up your favorite shoes, or take a dump on the new rug and hump the leg of a visitor, but somewhere along the way they become something you just couldn't imagine your life without.
Real friends are a lot like dogs. They stick around. They're loyal. They're sometimes so excited to see you, they pee a little. They protect you from harm, and they just come lay at your feet when you need it. They're the perfect soul mate. They help you get through life. Because life, it's a bitch.
I'm a firm believer that every brunette needs a blonde best friend(s) or one that may try blonde-ish highlights (you know who you are). I'm also a believer that you need to be able to count true friends on one hand. I have several acquaintances in my life, and some are very dear to me. But, I am lucky to have loved and lost a best friend, only to gain another. I've been blessed by acquaintances who have introduced me to a best friend. I'm thankful to have worked with one, lived with one, and thankful I've been tossed into a deep-ended adventure with one.
Truth be told, I like sticking with people I can trust. I also know I am creating memories that last a lifetime and I'm thankful for that.
Because my true friends are for a lifetime.
