Following our 8-hour flight to London we had about 15 hours to layover in this European city.
Joseph and Tim arranged for a bus to pick our class up at the airport and haul us around to the big sites of London instead of rotting in the airport all day.
By the way, everybody knew we were here! London is one of the safest cities in the world and has more cameras than Wal-Mart (said, bus driver Steve). For every minute you walk the streets of London you are photographed 17 times. We were here about eight hours. You can do the math.
Steve was our bus driver and tour guide. He gave us a rundown of London, and provided us with a few nuggets of information about landmarks in London, including the United States Embassy. We even witnessed a dignitary moving by motorcade. Steve dumped us out at Buckingham Palace where we witnessed the changing of the guard.
After the change we split into a couple groups to explore. We found a pub for lunch with fish and chips that resembled Moby Dick, and witnessed protestors gathering near Parliament.
We walked. A lot. We snapped pics. We walked over bridges. We dodged traffic that is backwards (for us, anyway). We stopped at a phone booth, took in the beauty of Westminster Abbey and saw Big Ben. We got the snap shot of London.
As we loaded up to head back to the airport we realized we're only on day two of our trip, and we haven't even made it to our final destination yet. We're tired, we haven't showered in two days, and the sleep tally is sitting at approximately five hours in two days (even as I write this I'm struggling to stay awake!)
However, tonight we will hop on a plane and journey 11 hours to our next destination and where our journey really begins.
Next stop, Cape Town, South Africa!
