The South Africa blog bank, cheating death…

We visited Cape Point one day, and it was a little high up. The photo to the right shows the hike. That little thing on top is the lighthouse where the lookouts were.

The day we visited it was also what I would consider Western Kansas windy.

This does not bode well for floppy hat wearing.

Classmate Ryan had on his safari hat because the sun in South Africa is hot. And, close. People like me got some excellent sun while we were there, but others needed a little protection from the elements.

On the hike down the mountain (because we rode the trolley up, best 45 rand I spent!) we ran in to Ryan who told us he had lost his hat. The wind had caught it and blew it off his head and it was laying perched on a rock overlooking the dual ocean view. It was gone.

"Not worth risking my life for a $12 hat," he said with a laugh.

Apparently, another classmate thought the $12 was well worth cheating death. Yes. Someone crawled out on the rock and fetched the hat!

I have no idea how this was done because I didn't see it, but I heard it was terrifyingly captivating. We're talking no small drop off. One slip, one miniscule misstep and you're bouncing off cliffs on your way to sure death!

There's also a good chance that the sharks would have eaten his body before it could have been recovered.

Crazy. Insane.

That, my friends, is how tight our KARL class has gotten. We'll risk life and limb for each other, hell, even for a hat! A $12 hat!

We're glad Jonathan is safe. We're glad Ryan got his hat back. That could have been a real downer for the trip.
