Word of the day...

Freelance…
It’s just a fancy word for unemployed.

I have found that even though I really enjoy writing freelance, I miss a day to day routine. I know I should be flogged in public for stating such garbage (who wants to work?), but I’m a creature of habit. No matter how hard I try I’m what most would call boring and highly predictable.

As routine as I am, I do like some flexibility. I’m the type of writer that has to be in the zone to write. If I feel something come to me I have to jot it down or type it out. If I don’t get it down fast it will fall out of my head. Freelancing allows me to do just that, write at my pace. I also get to pick and choose. I write what I want to write about.

Okay, let’s be really honest here and say I write what pays. I don’t like to candy coat things.

Let’s face it folks the economy is in the shitter and there isn’t much we can do about it. I know first hand about interviewing for a job only to find it ‘on hold’ or ‘cut for budget reasons’ and it sucks. I’m not alone.

The entire world is in a recession and if we don’t fix it fast we’ll be dust bowling it like our grandparents in the 1930s, fighting for the last sack of flour – while sending text messages to our friends of course. OMG – SOB TOOK R SAC!!!

Obama is today’s FDR, we can only hope. I digress.

The point is - if I want to sit in my sweats and watch the fourth season of “The Office” all day, with my laptop open hoping the next Pulitzer Prize winning piece will come to me… nobody is there to tell me no.

And that is awesome.

Sidenote: I picked up a new freelance gig, check back and I'll keep you posted.
